Two paragliders collided in mid-air Thursday morning and one of them has died from his injuries.

The collision occurred near Interstate 40 and the Rio Puerco west of Albuquerque, according to state police. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene.

Lieutenant Ramon Casaus of the New Mexico State Police said that a witness described the two air craft colliding before the wing of one of the paragliders collapsed and wrapped around the pilot, sending him plummeting to the ground.

“They were about 100 to 150 up in the air when the collision happened,” said Casaus.

The second paraglider managed to get his aircraft under control and land it. He was treated at the scene and released.

Authorities Thursday afternoon identified the man who died as Army Col. Martin George of Colorado Springs.
