Michael-
Thanks for posting this. It reminds us all that we have to ALWAYS be a pilot first and entertainer LAST!!!
Considering the drop that machine must have taken, I am amazed that it is in as good of condition as it appears to be. The front wheel assembly is toast and the prop is also but the rest of the bird looks nice and straight yet with no noticable breaks anywhere in the pics.
Too bad for this pilot. Although I don't think I know him our ppc world is pretty small and you gotta feel for the guy. It appears he is a BFI as he was flying a trainer with dual controls. I wonder if he was already SP or N numbered? Was he by himself?
Fly safe!!;)

I saw the pictures online from the crash and it looks like a N-Number on the right line guard on the prop ring.

The news stories didn't mention his certification or that of the PPC. I personally couldn't tell from the pictures and I haven't heard anything on the other forums. But let's look at what we do know. Just from the witness accounts he was clearly in violation of either FAR 91.119 (b) or (c). You won't find telephone or power lines at or above 500' in a most neighborhoods, or anywhere else that I'm aware of. And if they were, it would be on a sectional.
Based on what I've read, this accident has an obvious cause. A Sport Pilot certificate is no guarantee that the pilot will always exercise good judgement. It only means that they have had the training to avoid flying into telephone lines.
