I just got back from the Extravaganza about 40 minutes ago, and it looks like if I type fast, I just might be the first report on how the fly in went. Basically it went perfect. There were over 300 PPC's and I think they said about 13 PPG's. On Saturday morning they launched 141 PPC's within 30 minutes (around 26 minutes) and 143 all together. Even more amazing than the big numbers, is the smaller one....absolutely no incidents. NOTHING! The worst I saw was a tangled chute or two. During the mass launch, 98.5% of the inflations looked picture perfect. The big winner of the PPC was from Cimmaron, KS. Sorry, but I do not know his name. He was absolutely in shock. About an hour after the drawing, I saw him checkin it out, and he still had a disbelieving look on his face. Another site just about as amazing was the amount of spectators. The public parking lot was just about full, and the roads next to the field were packed. I left the site a couple times, and I had to weave back and forth through the cars to make it to the highway.
The entertainment was also incredible. For those of you that left after the big give away, you missed an awesome band. I'd say Powrachute inviting them back again next year is a must.
I learned a lot while there. The seminars were all full of information. JD was gonna give me some training and maybe put me in the front seat, however, I attended the fly-in alone this year (I’m a minor) and couldn't get the papers signed. I did learn alot though from simply watching everyone fly. How many chances do you get to watch hundreds and hundreds of take-offs and landings? I spent a good half the time walking around looking at all the machines and got some good ideas on mine.
The most valuable thing I think I learned while there, is that I am not fearless of flying. When JD mentioned putting me in the front seat, from then until there was a definite no from the Powrachute folks, I felt excited, but still definitely nervous, and maybe a bit scared. EXACTLY how I want myself to feel.
If you ever get a chance to go to this fly-in, do it! This is my 3rd year, and if they continue with tradition, it only gets better! I took a lot of pictures. As soon as they get developed, I'll send some.
