He was taken off in an ambulance. No passenger. I met him the weekend he bought Bills plane. He was considering my Dragonfly. During our conversation he told me how he had a deposit on a gyro. When he went to pick it up the owner refused to sell it to him saying he would kill himself in it. He would insist coming to Zanes and fly. If you have ever seen Zanes field its no place for beginners! When Zane told me about him wanting to fly from there I made it very clear he did NOT want him flying from his property. I told him this day was coming.
Zane called me a few minutes ago saying how many close calls Hugh has had. The injuries are not life treating I'm told. The FFA and all locals are on Seen now.

When saw the title, Breaking News, and that it was posted by dagwodzz, my first thought before opening was that there was finally a cure for the DF's vibration issues and that the factory suddenly overcame cutomer satisfaction issues.

I know....my thoughts went there too! But in the end I found out that the Future Farmers of America are responding to some accident scene (seen)! Wow...the guy must have hurt some livestock or something in the process!
Sorry dagwodzz.....just couldn't help it!:D

How long has he had his PPC and how many flights do you think he had on it?

Report and video link,

About the only thing the reporter got right was the price of a PPC at the end of the video.

I liked how the sheriff said the "chute failed to deploy". Kind of like "The car went out of control". Failure to take personal responsibility is more like it... glad he didn't injure anyone.

Bob, He bought in I think in July. The guy has more money than brains. His runway is about 400ft. with trees at the end. This morning he added an extra 50lbs to the already 100lb or so in sand bags to simulate a person. Took off with a tail wind on a short runway with trees at the end of it. The rest as they is history!

It did'nt say how bad he was hurt. What did he do, just fly into the trees cause his runway was to short?

I love how every newspaper prints different info. Note the part about the "Federal Administration" :-) This is from today's (Oct 7) Springfield, MO News-Leader.
"The operator of a powered parachute that crashed into trees near Branson on Monday said that extra weight may have prevented the machine from rising quickly enough, Taney County Sheriff Jim Russell said.
Hubert Barnes, 62, suffered minor injuries in the crash, the sheriff said.
The crash occurred near U.S. 65 and Mo. 248.
Barnes was conscious when he was taken to a hospital for treatment, the sheriff said.
Barnes said he added bags of salt for weight for the craft consisting of a pod for the pilot and engine attached to a parachute by cables, Russell said.
The added weight might have caused the craft to rise too slowly to avoid several trees, he said.
The machines are not regulated by the Federal Administration, so there will be no further investigation, the sheriff said."
This is from today's Branson Daily News
"A Branson man suffered minor injuries when his ultralight-style plane went down just north of Branson Monday morning.
According to Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell, 62-year-old Hubert Barnes, of Branson, had just taken off from a residence on Nolan Road and had gone about 200-300 yards when his plane crashed into a tree line at about 7:15 a.m. Monday. Russell described Barnes injuries as minor and said he was up walking around at the scene.
“Anytime you walk away from one of those crashes, you are lucky,” he said.
The plane, Russell said, was an ultralight style, which has a parachute, instead of wings.
“He seemed to think his parachute did not lock and he had too much weight,” Russell said, explaining the plane was balanced using bags of salt, and Barnes believes he might have had too much weight on board.
Russell said Barnes was taken to an area hospital for treatment of “fairly minor injuries.”

So much for "no further investigation":

This is a prelim and nothing further may come of it.
He should be OK:
The plane is registered and has an AW certificate
He just bought it in July so his student license should be less than 2 year old.
The only variable will be whether he has a solo endorsement or not.
Maybe he is one lucky fellow in more than one way!

Student certificate was issued on 7/18.
Certificates
1 of 1
DOI: 7/18/2008
Certificate: STUDENT PILOT
airworthiness has been terminated:
N868S is Assigned
Aircraft Description
Serial Number E068S

Status Cert Terminated

So what happens if he did have his solo endorsement? Those are usually fairly restrictive as to where you can fly. These first few cases will be interesting to watch how the FAA handles it.

There is a forum on the TV station site and one of his neighbors says that he is more injured than it 1st appeared - it looks like he broke his back and is still in the hospital.
Very sad.

Does anybody know when the airworthiness certificate was suspended? I do not think the FAA suspected the airworthiness certificate because of the crash this fast.
When you purchase an aircraft there is a form you fill out to transfer ownership. As I understand it, and somebody correct me if I am, you can operate your newly purchased aircraft with the pink copy of the transfer form. I think the hard registration card is suppose to be sent, by the seller, to the FAA and the buyer needs to submit the form to the FAA.
If I am correct, I suspect the seller sent the hard registration card in and the buyer did not submit the form in a timely fashion and after a given period of time, the FAA canceled the airworthiness certificate until such time as the registration process is complete.
But, I could be wrong about the process.

Bob,
I found a quote on the web saying that they can terminate it after a crash.
It did seem that it hit the data base quite fast. Especially for the Goverment.
Hope all is well.
